Blockchain & inclusivity: Can new technologies help the LGBTQ+ community? – Part 4

Blockchain technology has revolutionized many sectors since its inception. We often talk about its impact in the traditional finance industry and the changes it brings to the field of art. But one subject remains little discussed: what impact can blockchain have on inclusiveness? How can this revolution be put at the service of the common good and the inclusion of different communities? This is what we will discuss in “Blockchain & inclusivity”. For this first series, we will focus on the link between new technologies and the LGBTQ+ community, through a series of interviews with big names in the blockchain universe. Today we will focus on reviews by Joe DiPasquale, Li Jun and Mike Musante. Let’s go !

Joe DiPasquale of BitBull Capital and StartOut:

Joe is the CEO of BitBull Capital, which manages cryptocurrency hedge funds, and co-founder of StartOut, a non-profit organization dedicated to building business leaders by nurturing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.

Technology has been of utmost importance to the LGBTQ+ community. Already in our formative years, many are using technology and social platforms to find other LGBTQ+ people, even before they have made their coming out or to have spoken about it to those around them. Often the first search people will do will be online and on forums.

LGBTQ+ youth make up over 40% of homeless youth in America. The importance of technology platforms in fostering connectivity cannot therefore be overemphasized, whether through the web or even through the apps and mobile phones that disadvantaged young people have access to.

The impact of technology in the field of health is also very important, whether it is the arrival of drugs against HIV (from those that treat to those that prevent) or the increase in the transfer of knowledge about LGBTQ+ specific health issues among physicians, who are generally only familiar with heteronormative medicine.

With blockchain, many pioneering LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs have sought ways to support the community through commerce, whether with the LGBT token or dedicated queer chambers of commerce. One important thing I always hear from those who work in AI and blockchain is the diversity of this sector compared to other industries. The technology and meritocratic focus of our industry lends itself to open-minded, forward-thinking people.

With NFTs, artists have the ability to create unique digital artworks and own those rights. Due to its digital nature, this type of art can be very specific yet enjoyed by a large number of people. I was recently chatting with a friend about an international digital artist whose art he liked because it evoked things they had both experienced as LGBTQ+ people. However, they would not necessarily have made a connection had they been limited to the physical sphere of art.

Technology has truly helped me on my own journey as an LGBTQ+ person and will certainly continue with the new advancements in health, finance, security and representation that we see emerging with the most advancements. recent.

Li Jun from Ontology:

Li is the founder of Ontology, a self-sovereign ID, decentralized digital ID and data blockchain.

Unfortunately, centralized systems and current technology no longer provide the security needed to ensure users are protected from malicious actors. Every day we hear about new data leaks and new security breaches. For LGBTQ+ people living in certain countries, the leak of personal information related to their digital identity can represent a real danger and, in some cases, become a matter of life or death.

People should have the right to control how their identity is located in the digital sphere. Decentralized blockchain-based identity protocols can put users back in control of what they share online and with whom. Amid current regulatory discussions that often criticize the anonymity offered by blockchain, it is important to note that some minorities cannot afford the luxury of privacy or civil liberties. This makes anonymity not only essential for them, but also one of the great advantages of blockchain technology.

Mike Musante of Decentralized Pictures:

Mike is the co-founder of Decentralized Pictures, a non-profit organization and blockchain-based moviemaking platform.

The film industry has traditionally been very insular and somewhat closed to new and innovative voices in film, art and culture. Blockchain technology has the power to break down silos in this industry by democratizing the process of curating talent and content, enabling greater inclusion among the voices that speak through media and film. The mission of our decentralized platform is to provide access to independent and underrepresented talent hoping to break into the film industry. This, by fostering a content curation process through which users around the world vote for the most deserving projects.

Sadly, only a small percentage of current filmmakers are part of the LGBTQ+ community, despite its many talented and passionate members. Often these people face inherent biases, which can be eliminated by using blockchain technology for a fair voting process.

We have come to the end of this fourth part of our series of articles “Blockchain & inclusivity: Can new technologies help the LGBTQ+ community?” “. More talks from blockchain actors and actresses await you in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out and see you next week!
