YouTube sees ‘incredible potential’ in blockchain, metaverse, NFTs and Web 3.0

The succession of statements from YouTube barons regarding the company’s new directions for NFTs, Web 3.0, blockchain and the metaverse portends a titanic project being finalized. Neal Mohan, through a blog post published last Thursday, gave a preview of what’s to come during 2022.

Approach new technologies responsibly

At the end of January, we reported on Cointribune, the words of Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, on Web3 and the possible adoption of NFTs on the platform. The first will act as source of inspiration for the Californian box, and the second will serve as new methods of engagement for the fans, will constitute an additional source of income for the latter.

Neal Mohan, as YouTube’s Product Manager, must have spoken to Dame Wojcicki at length about this. This is why he finds opportunities and great potential there.

Here is how he supported the idea:

There’s a lot to consider to ensure we approach these new technologies responsibly, but we believe there’s also incredible potential. »

In his article, the Chief Product Officer from YouTube presented a list of cutting-edge products, tools, and features that will be rolling out in 2022. A lot of them are related to the metaverse, web 3.0 technology, blockchain, and NFTs.

This is to prove to its partners that YouTube is constantly active and that its leaders are able to promise them new forms of support and options. Certainly, NFTs will be able to help video creators come up with new content ideas or sniff out successful projects on the platform.

Neal Mohan therefore explained these opportunities:

Web3 also opens up new opportunities by creators. We believe that new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans. Together, they will be able to collaborate on new projects and earn money in a way that was not possible before. »

In practice, what does it give?

Fortunately, N. Mohan was not stingy with details in his post. Otherwise, we would just speculate. Thus, he granted a few lines to very fashionable concepts, namely:

– NFT:

Thanks to this technology, creators will be able to tokenize their videos, photos, artworks, experiences… in order to optimize fan engagement.

There’s a lot to consider to make sure we approach these new technologies responsibly, but we think there’s also incredible potential.“, he wrote.

– Metaverse:

Virtual reality is in his eyes a new way of considering and exploiting content, especially games, with which YouTube will begin its conquest of the metaverse.

Finally, we couldn’t talk about innovation without mentioning the Metaverse! We are thinking about how to make viewing more immersive. The first area where you can expect to see an impact is gaming, where we will be working to bring more interactions to games and make them feel more alive.»

Yes, like many of us, this product manager won’t want to separate the metaverse with innovation. IMPOSSIBLE, by the way.

As for the outcome of this project, he thought that the patient is in order. Thus, he mentioned that “it’s still early days, but we can’t wait to see how we can turn these virtual worlds into a reality for viewers“.

Thehatershave no effect on YouTube

This big step taken by the giant Google platform is in a way an affront to the opposing camps which only sow negativity among the public concerning the virtual world. Some big boxes like Ubisoft, Discord or Team17 have already paid the costs, unfortunately.

Here is their small list of recurring accusations regarding NFTs:

– coin catcher;

– scam ;

– environmental damage;

– etc.

Adam Smith, one of their spokesperson writing for The Independent (UK), and not a very famous theoretician of the division of labor, did not hesitate to castigate the disrespectful side of the environment of this project.

Along with his anti-NFT remarks in his article, he posted this on Twitter:

A YouTube spokesperson told me they don’t have anything more to share about the massive environmental damage NFTs cause, even though Google is “dedicated to sustainability,” so that’s great.»

In the absence of a satisfactory explanation from the administrators of YouTube, he urged the employees of this video platform, and also those of Google, to blow their dissatisfaction to him in order to make an article.

Maybe it’s time to say loud and clear through the media that the mechanismProof-of-Stakefar ahead ofProof-of-Workin terms of energy consumption. And that a large number of channels operating on this eco-friendly basis currently host NFTs.
